The SonsвЂ™ first record release, on Verve Records, was a single called вЂњSing Me A RainbowвЂќ. The new band was named for the вЂњfrontвЂќ man, Bill Champlin.ДЇor a couple of years the Sons played as a five-piece band, working the college and high school dance circuit and the various clubs and bars in the Bay Area.

вЂњSixвЂќ members, Bill Champlin and Tim Cain, added Terry Haggerty and the first of a series of drummers and bass players. The Sons of Champlin started in 1965 in Marin County, California, rising from the wreckage of the Opposite Six, a locally popular R&B band from the pre-Beatle era.

At the White House, the band stripped down the production but played with an intense emotional edge that the Foo Fighters have always been noted for. The vocals harmonies are beautifully sung and pay tribute dearly to Paul McCartneyвЂ™s original vocal performance. On the record, the recording is brilliantly recorded with attention to the smallest details in the keyboards and string lines. However, the one similarity between both versions is that Foo Fighters intensity that the band brings to the material. We have included both the studio version and live performances here of the Foo Fighters versions of вЂњBand on the Run.вЂќ When listening to both versions, some may be surprised at the marked differences between the studio and live versions. During the performance Dave Grohl said to Paul McCartney who was sitting in the audience,В вЂњPaul, youвЂ™re definitely my hero,вЂќ then turned to President Obama and added,В вЂњMr. The performance was in tribute to Paul McCartney who was being honored with the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. For the year 1974, the Foo Fighters recorded a version of Paul McCartneyвЂ™s вЂњBand on the Run.вЂќДЄfter the recording of Band on the Run, the Foo Fighters performed that song for Paul McCartney and President Obama in 2010 at the White House in Washington D.C. The album was a compilation of various artists all recording one song each that would represent the 40 year career of the BBC Radio One. In 2007, BBC Radio 1 celebrated their 40th anniversary by releasing a tribute album.
